Drumreagh Presbyterian Church Ministers

Rev. J M Barkley
(1935 – 1939)
After the departure of Rev. Moore in 1933 it was two years until a possible successor was found. In 1935 four candidates preached for the vacancy but a decision could not be reached. Then, through Rev. Wallace, the session heard of a young man who had only just been licensed by Derry Presbytery, Rev John Monteith Barkley B.A. Rev Barkley agreed to preach and was ordained in Drumreagh on 24th September 1935.

Rev Barkley was the first minister to occupy the new manse. Mr Barkley held a Sunday school and Bible class every Sunday in Balnamore and set up a club for men and boys of the small village.

Rev Barkley left Drumreagh in May 1939 after receiving a call from the congregation of 2nd Ballyboy. He was later installed in Cooke centenary church in Belfast.

He resigned in 1954 after being appointed as Professor of church ministry and symbolics in Presbyterian College Belfast and later went on to become Principal in 1976. He retired in 1981 and was invited to preach at the special service in 1988 to mark Drumreagh’s 150th Anniversary.
